John and Mary are a power couple with three kids living New Jersey. Mary is a democratic state senator and John runs a high-level consulting firm. Despite being liberals they are in favor of upholding the second amendment, falling far right on that issue. When John and Jesse, their eldest son, are out hunting, a stray bullet from the gun of some kids goofing off pierces Jesse’s neck killing him. The fallout is immediate. Mary veers left on the gun issue and mounts a powerful campaign for governor from an anti-gun platform. In John’s rage he assaults Mary for her betrayal, and she divorces him. On his way to rock bottom John finds allies on the right and mounts a campaign opposing Mary as an independent. It’s neck and neck till the end of the film when John’s mental health gets the better of him and he does something desperate and violent.
